So I was perusing through IMDB today. Reading threads for the movies that I like, like I usually do on a daily to weekly basis. I happened to be reading the page for The Departed, because as some of you MAY know, the Golden Globes are on tonight... And I was just browsing for some thoughts on if/what The Departed was going to win. And I came across this thread. It annoyed me WAY more than usual. This guy just ranted about how Steven Spielberg is such a better director than Martin Scorcese. Which really went up my ass... Here's just a smidge of his idiocy.
"I keep on reading about all the jokes towards Steven Spielberg, and while that's your right, you must also know that like it or not, Spielberg is the most successful director of all time, with two Best Director Oscars, an AFI award, numerous best director awards all over the world, a National Merit award, and other achievements that no other living director can even compete with. Oh, and Spielberg just got a Kennedy honor, something I doubt Scorsese will ever get in his lifetime."
I mean, COME ON. STEVEN SPIELBERG. Quentin Tarantino is a better director and he's directed a handful of films. It's quality, not quantity. Spielberg has directed 49397897 movies... Some of my favorites even. The Indiana Jones series, Jaws, Hook... Among a ton of fun to watch garbage like Jurassic Park. Which I readily admit that I love. Then theres the big "achievements". Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, Schindlers List... Saving Private Ryan was a great movie. But in my opinion, once you've seen a WWII movie... You've seen then all. Amistad was one of the most boring movies I have EVER seen. I fell asleep. I'm sorry. And Schindler's List... Great movie. It's sad, it's moving, it's long as fuck. Doesn't mean it's bad. But I'd rather visit ANY holocaust memorial/monument/museum 550 times, than watch this movie more than twice. And again, in my opinion, holocaust movies are like war movies. Seen one, seen all.
While you can argue that the same can be said for mobster movies, I disagree. But back to Martin Scorcese... Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, THE DEPARTED... And even No Direction Home. All fucking... Amazing films. But oops, none ever won the Academy Award for Best Picture or Best Director. So just discredit his work. Taxi Driver was nominated for 4 Oscars. Raging Bull-8. Robert DeNiro won best actor. Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for Goodfellas, which was nominated for 6 Oscars. Casino-1. Gangs of New York was nominated for 10. And even No Direction Home won an Emmy and a Grammy.
Scorcese isn't even my favorite director. I just think people should give credit where credit is due.
This rant has lasted FAR too long.
My point is that this guy is the same type of person who prefers the Yankees because they're won more World Series' than anyone else.
And it's annoying.
I know a certain Boyfriend in a Coma (I would call you by your REAL name, but that would break the cycle of me NEVER using your actual name.) in particular will probably enjoy this rant. Because he's so often praised Scorcese VIA LJ. Also, I'll be rootin for your boy tonight watching the Golden Globes.
